Suicides increase among Indian expats; Keralites outnumber others

It is also observed that the money taken by credit cards, bank loans and misuse of social media like WhatsApp lead to such saddening tendency.

Sharjah: Reports concerned to the lives of expatriates showed that the number of suicides have been remarkably increasing among the expatriates in UAE. Last year, the number of NRI deaths in UAE due to accidents was 26. However, the number of suicides were 51. The suicide tendency has increased in the last two years. Sadly, Keralites topped the number of suicide cases among expats, according to the statewise statistics. Social activists in UAE pointed out the reasons behind the suicide as financial crisis and debts.

Social activist Asharuf Thamarassery said that expats who are less than 30-years-old also choose to die. It is also observed that the money taken by credit cards, bank loans and misuse of social media like WhatsApp lead to such saddening tendency. UAE government and voluntary organizations are constantly undertaking awareness programmes among expatriates to combat the social issue.

The scheme announced by finance minister in the recent budget to bring the bodies of expats to Kerala at government expense is welcoming. However, circumstances under which the expats die abroad is a serious matter of discussion, said social activist Nasar Nanthi.

Norka and other concerned departments should discern the reasons behind the suicides and find out solutions to the issue. Inability to pay back bank loans on time, its interests and penalty interests bring the life to a standstill situation and as a final resort, expats embrace suicide to liberate themselves from hurdles, said economic experts. Family issues and financial problems at home also lead to the decision to end life, opined social workers.

Psychologist Susan Korooth said that hesitancy to share their problems with others and unable to arrive at solutions encourages suicide tendency. Indian origin students in UAE are also showing increased suicide tendencies. Various online games add fuel to this, added Susan.
