HC: No special permission needed to drive light taxi vehicles

Justice K Surendramohan issued the order considering the 2017 Supreme Court verdict which ruled that individuals with driver’s license for LMV can drive public transport and carriage vehicles in the same segment

Kochi: The High Court has observed that those who have obtained license to drive Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) can drive light taxi vehicles weighing less than seven tones.

Justice K Surendramohan issued the order considering the 2017 Supreme Court verdict which ruled that individuals with driver’s license for LMV can drive public transport and carriage vehicles in the same segment.

The latest order concludes the petition filed by Noorumon from Tirur and others. Earlier, the Tirur Regional Transport Officer (RTO) had denied permission for the petitioners to drive public transport vehicles citing that they lacked educational qualifications stipulated by commercial license norms. The petitioners had approached the HC in 2012 challenging the RTO’s decision.
