Has a lot to learn from ISRO espionage case: CM

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayai Vijayan handed over Rs 50 lakh compensation to former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan in connection with the ISRO espionage case of 1994. The amount was handed over at a function in Thiruvananthapuram.

“It was his determination that earned him the compensation. I congratulate him. There is a lot to be learnt from the Supreme court verdict in this case for the people who handle such matters. Hence the government decided to award the compensation publically,” said CM.

Actually the investigating officers, who had then probed the espionage case, should give the compensation to Nambi Narayanan. Government is looking into the legalities of this possibility, he added.

People who use investigation agencies to their favour should be careful. All those who act according to prejudice that a case might end this way because a similar one had and all those who act upon assumptions and media should be vigilant while handling such matters, Chief Minister said.

The Supreme Court had ordered to award Rs 50 lakh compensation Nambi Narayanan for being subjected to harassment in ISRO espionage case. It had said that Nambi Narayanan was unnecessarily arrested, harassed and subjected to mental cruelty in ISRO spy case.

Nambi Narayanan was arrested in connection with the espionage case on November 30, 1994. But the court accepted the CBI report that the case charged against him was false. The CBI also had recommended action against the accused officers.
