The bottles collected at the outlets of Clean Kerala Company will be handed over to recycling units.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Beverages Corporation (BEVCO) and Clean Kerala Company signed an agreement to buy back old liquor bottles. Initially, the project will be implemented in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode cities.

Haritha Karma Sena will be collecting the bottles in cooperation with the local bodies. A price has been fixed for plastic and glass bottles. As part of the plastic ban, the shops that sell plastic should take it back also. Since the Beverages Corporation failed to arrange a system for this, it sought help of an external agency.

The bottles collected at the outlets of Clean Kerala Company will be handed over to recycling units. The documents will be examined by Beverages Corporation staff every 15 days. Officials said that the remuneration to be paid to Clean Kerala Company has not been finalised yet.

Collecting bottles at beverages outlets is not practical and that is why the duty was entrusted with external agencies, said Beverages Corporation MD Sprajan Kumar.

Price of glass bottles

  • 1 litre liquor bottle – Rs 3
  • 2 half litre bottles – Rs 3
  • 3 quarter bottles – Rs 3
  • Plastic bottles – Rs 15 per kilogram
