New Delhi: The Supreme Court awarded Rs 50 lakh compensation to ISRO scientist S Nambi Narayanan for being subjected to harassment in ISRO espionage case.
The apex court said that Nambi Narayanan was unnecessarily arrested, harassed and subjected to mental cruelty in ISRO spy case. It also set up a three-member panel headed by former judge D K Jain to probe framing up of Narayanan in spy case.
The Supreme Court was giving its verdict on a petition filed by Nambi Narayanan seeking action against the officials who trapped him in the case. The court also has ordered that the compensation amount should be levied from the accused officers.
Nambi Narayanan had demanded that action should be taken against former DGP Sibi Mathews, former SPs K. K. Joshua and S. Vijayan, who investigated into the espionage case that destroyed his future. The state government had made it clear that it will accept the Supreme Court verdict.
Nambi Narayanan had demanded that he wanted the authorities to take action against the officials rather than giving him a compensation.
Nambi Narayanan was arrested in connection with the espionage case on November 30, 1994. But the court accepted the CBI report that the case charged against him was false. The CBI also had recommended action against the accused officers. But the state government issued an order ending the probe into the case.
Nambi Narayanan responded that he is happy with the Supreme Court verdict and its decision to appoint a committee to investigate into the case. He added that he wanted a CBI investigation into the case rather than a probe by the committee.
