New fraud alert: 8 lakh looted from account using cancelled mobile number

Kollam: Kollam City Cyber ​​Crime Police have arrested a man for looting money from the bank account of a retired government servant using her cancelled mobile number. The police have arrested Puthukkadanveettil Shanavas (29) from Perumbavoor. The accused stole Rs 8.16 lakh from the account of Shobhana Kumari, resident of Thirumullavaram, through net banking services.

Shobhana Kumari opened her account in 2009. The mobile number linked to the account got cancelled as she did not use it for a long time. This number was later allotted to one who was in the gang of Shanavas.

The number, linked to Kumari's bank account, received messages related to the transactions. Shanavas logged in to the net banking account using the OTP came to the phone number and transferred the money.

Shobhana Kumari realised that there was nothing in the account when she went to withdraw money. She then complained to the district police chief.

Police found Rs 2 lakh in Shanavas' account and the rest in the gang members' accounts.
