Kozhikode: A couple has been arrested for embezzling Rs 11 lakh from a person over a marriage proposal by duping their daughter as an orphan. Baiju Nazir (42) and his wife Rashida Manzilil Rashida (38) hailing from Varkala, were arrested on Thursday based on a complaint lodged by Abdul Wajid (26), a trader in Kadungallur.

Abdul Wajid wanted to marry an orphaned and impoverished young woman. The accused Rashidah met Wajid on social media and claimed that she is terminally ill and living in an orphanage at Thrissur.

She also showed the pictures of her elder daughter to convince him. Following this, Wajid repeatedly gave her Rs 11 lakh in various instalments during the period between March to December 2021.

She also refused to see him in person when he disclosed that he wanted to marry her. Following this, an investigation based on the address given by her in the bank revealed that the youth was deceived by the woman. He then lodged a complaint with the police. The police team reached Varkala and arrested Rashida and her husband.
