Every life is a textbook. The lessons learnt from the experiences and ordeals in one’s lifetime are conveyed to the coming generations. When it is the life of celebrities, then its relevance and significance go up. Here the life of Savitri, the first superstar among the South Indian actresses, is blossomed. Many titles befit her like the star actress of the 50’s and 60’s, talented director, and a personality to be marked in the history of cinema.
Many dramatic moments have passed in the life of a girl, from losing her father when she was mere 6 months old, to becoming a superstar later and finally ending up in a hospital bed unrecognized and ignored by all. Nag Ashwin focuses his camera to that life. We have also witnessed many such stars on the silver screen.
From a Malayali’s point of view, Keerthy Suresh who played Savitri in this film, has rose to the status of a talented actress by smoothly enacting the celebrity life of a person who was the life partner of romantic hero Gemini Ganesan and later broke down both physically and financially. Keerthy has done justice to the role by staying close to the life of Savitri through her screen presence and excellent performance.
Dulquer Salmaan played the role of Gemini Ganesan with utmost perfection. However, since it is the life of Savitri, there is not much reference to the life of Gemini Ganesan. So, we have to wait and see if the audience is satisfied with the movie. Yesteryear stars like Sivaji Ganesan and N. T. Rama Rao appear in the movie in conversations and in the clippings, but there was no trace of MGR which was an apparent drawback.
In addition to the history and old film making techniques, the life of a journalist who goes in search of Savitri’s life also is depicted parallel to the story. The character is played by Samantha Akkineni. She is inspired by the life of Savitri to take some important decisions in her own life. The length of the film could have been reduced because the second part after the interval gets lagging. The film set also lacked originality.
The movie was produced by Ashwin Dutt, Priyanka Dutt and Swapna Dutt under the banner of Vyjayanthi Movies. Siddharth Sivasamy prepared the script and Danny Lopez handled the cinematography. Mickey J Meyer composed the music. Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao is the editor.
