Indulekha Warrier, daughter of popular caricaturist and actor Jayaraj Warrier was an ordinary girl for few years. But at present, she is popular in Kerala like her father. Indulekha rose to fame as a singer after her song in the movie ‘Ottarsha’ became a hit track. The folk style of the song starting ‘Puthuchemba Nellu Kuthi’ and its rhythm won hearts of music lovers and elevated Indulekha to a popular singer.

Indulekha spoke to Mathrubhumi on her musical journey and personal life.

First step as a singer

Indulekha started her first music lessons at the age of 7. Her mother identified her singing talent and encouraged her to start music learning.

“My father used to sing old Malayalam songs for me. And I think I got a taste in music since childhood because of it. When I was little, I used to sing songs perfectly keeping every note. Finding my skill in music, my mother must have planned to make me a singer,” said Indulekha.

She started music class in the year 2000 under Hariprakash master.

“Though I was a lazy in the beginning, the classes created a passion for music. Later I became popular as singer Indulekha at Nedupuzha Kasthoorba School and Thrissur Holy Family School where I completed my schooling,” said the young talent.

Though my father is a busy artist, he found time to teach Malayalam poems to me. My schooling in Malayalam medium also helped me to have good pronunciation in Malayalam.

Gradually, I started to get prizes for light music in school arts festivals. I continued my music classes under eminent music teachers Poonkunnam Ramachandran and Nishanth. I had my ‘arrangettam’ (debut performance) in Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna temple in 2011. In short, my father boosted my confidence and my mother gave me the energy to become a singer. At present, I am learning music under Natesan master.

Entry as a playback singer

I made my film debut as a play back singer in 2014 with the song ‘Eeran kannilo’ in ‘Appothikiri’. In 2015, I took part in a reality show in a channel. Music directors Vidyasagar and Sarath were the judges of the show. Vidyasagar sir had given me a chance in a Tamil movie after listening to my songs in the show. The song, a duet starting ‘Pesu Pesu Isai mozhi’ from the movie ‘Uchathila Siva’, was a popular song in that time.

Later, I became confident to improve my singing talent with hard work.

I got an opportunity to sing in Rajiv Nair produced devotional Album titled ‘hare’ dedicated to Lord Krishna. I also worked with Popular music director Ratheesh Vegha in his music album.

About hit song ‘Puthuchemba Nellukuthi’

This is my first solo song in a movie. Sujith Vasudevan, director of ‘Ottarsha’ selected me for the song. Rajeev Nair suggested my name to him.

I was really afraid to sing when I knew Sarath sir was the music director for the song. But he encouraged me a lot and it worked out well to sing the song with perfection.

Favourite singer

I am a great fan of all popular singers. Yesudas, Jayachandran, S Janaki, P Susheela, Lata Mangeshkar, KS Chithra and Sujatha and the new singers are also my favourites. I think I have to learn at least one thing from every singer.

Thrissur native and my father’s close friend Singer P Jayachandran advised me to always engage in constant hearing to acquire music knowledge. I follow this as my theory in music.

A studious student and a passionate singer

I always give 100 percent commitment to my work in which I engage. I have scored A plus in all subjects till plus two. Later, I took B Tech in electrical engineering and completed MBA from CUSAT.

When I was a student at CUSAT, I got a golden opportunity to study ‘Kathakali sangeetham’. After my studies, I got job in Cognizant but resigned to focus on music.

Kalolsavam special music album goes viral

I sang the promo song for state Kalolsavam in 2018 which was held in Thrissur, The song starting 'Mashe kandotta pooram' produced by Artist Nandan Pillai went viral on social media. Apart from singing, I also acted in the album.

“I am all set to marry a music lover. We have been in a relationship for the last three years,” said Indulekha.

Indulekha will tie knot with Mannuthy native Anand Achuthankutty on January. Anad is a civil servant in Indian Defence Account Service.
