Kozhikode: Dates imported from Saudi Arabia has started to dominate the Ramzan market in Kozhikode. It is examined that Saudi dates varieties like Ajwa, Mabroom, Safawi, Amber and Mashrook are cheaply available in most of the shops here.
Earlier, Ajwa dates were sold below Rs 1200 in the wholesale market. But at present, Ajwa is priced at below 1000, said PK Abdul Azeez, a partner of Sulthana shop in Valiyangadi here.
Amid the pandemic, import of dates from Saudi Arabia was interrupted due to restrictions over number of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims and the financial crisis faced by shops. Because of this, we have received plenty of stock this season, said Azeez.
Apart from Saudi varieties, dates from Iran, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Oman, UAE and Jordan are also available in the market. But huge demand is found for Saudi varieties.
Fruits of good quality are available in the wholesale market for Rs 350 per kilo here. Some retail shops are also directly importing dates from abroad.
As most people opt dates for Ramzan fast-breaking, this fruit has great demand during every Ramzan season.
